内容説明

West Java, a densely populated part of Indonesia, is the focus of this study into women's work in the rural non-farm sector. It stresses the selectivity of the processes of marginalization and industrialization and their impact on women. Utilizing case studies on 13 industrial sub-sectors in more than 80 villages, empirical information on wages, conditions of work and labour relations is presented. Elements of diversity, such as class, age and marital status are organized according to women's work status as entrepreneurs, wage workers and unpaid family workers. This work has policy implications and theoretical consequences for the understanding of the economy of rural Java. In more general terms it also documents the increase in women's participation in the non-agricultural sector and the feminization of work in certain sectors of modern industry.
